Rave in Montgomery to Play Documentary Let the Children Play about Worldwide Youth Music Education Program
Below is a message from Laura Usiskin, who currently holds the cello fellowship with the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra.
Dear friends,
As many of you know, I have been working for many months to start a strings program for elementary school children in Montgomery. If you did not know that, now you do! The project is taking shape very nicely, and I'm very excited about it. I will definitely keep you all apprised of its progress.
One of the models that has been a great inspiration for the project is the Venezuelan program El Sistema. Through El Sistema, hundreds of thousands of children in Venezuela have learned to play instruments. The US is catching on; there are dozens of El Sistema programs cropping up all over our country.
Tomorrow [Thursday, 6/23] the movie Let the Children Play, a documentary about El Sistema and Gustavo Dudamel (30-year-old conductor of the LA Philharmonic and product of El Sistema), is being shown in movie theaters all over the country. It will be at Montgomery's own Rave at 6:30pm. I would encourage any of you who have curiosity about El Sistema and/or about the upcoming music program in Montgomery to attend.
I will be there, popcorn in hand!
