More Ballet and Opera Hi-Def Simulcasts, Jazz at AU Hotel, ATL Symphony's Pop Concerts, More

On Saturday (7/9), the Paris Opera's production of the love-story ballet, Children of Paradise, will be simulcast live at the Carmike Wynnsong 16 in Auburn. The showing begins at 12:30 PM. The 2008 ballet is an adaptation of a film (same name) by director Marcel Carné. José Martinez co-adapted the production with François Russillon. Martinez is also the choreographer. The music is new, as well, and was composed by Marc-Oliver Dupin. To get tickets online, you can go to fandango.com's July-9 page for the Carmike Wynnsong 16. The cinema will show an encore of this on July 20 at 7:30 PM. The video embedded here is also an encore on this blog. There are a few on YouTube that appear to be from this very production, but they're bootleg excerpts. Someone has made a short playlist of said bootlegs.

Then next Wednesday (7/13) in Montgomery, Rave Motion Pictures will show a production from the Metropolitan Opera's series, The Met: Live in HD. This time, it will be director Laurent Pelly's production of La Fille du Régiment, a comic opera by Gaetano Donizetti. The show, an encore from 2008, starts at 6:30 PM. Click here to buy tickets. Jazz in Auburn, Maybe Tuskegee

Thursday night (7/7) will find the Jane Drake Trio again performing at Piccolo. I caught part of the show last week, and enjoyed Jane's vocal presentation very much. She's one of those jazz singers who treats time and pitch like competing admirers. She pretends not to pay attention to them, but really they're both wrapped around her finger. AU students Jonathan Lynn on piano and Sidney Simmons on bass continue to play well, I suspect in no small part due to Jane's influence. They play 8-11. A recent post of mine included some nice audio from Jane.

I have yet to hear who is playing at Piccolo this Friday (7/8) and Saturday (7/9) nights. I will update this post when I do.

UPDATE: Now I know. Friday (7/8) will be saxophonist La'Roy Bodiford and Saturday (7/9) will be saxophonist Kenyon Carter. If you type their names in the search field above, you'll find other posts where I've embedded video of both of these very good saxophonists.

On Sunday (7/10) for Arricia's jazz brunch, returning will be Jack Dresher on bass, Joe Thomas on piano and Sam Fredericks on drums. Times are 11 AM to 2 PM.

They're not quite sure yet about jazz on Friday (7/8) at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center in Tuskegee. It's been going on weekly for a while, but sometimes it doesn't happen. I'll update this post if I learn more.

Columbus, Montgomery

On Friday (7/8) at The Loft, jazz group Just Friends will perform. Members are guitarist Elwood Madeo, saxophonist Fred Ezekiel, bassist and Auburn Knights alum David Johnston and drummer David Morgan. These are four of the five members of the Columbus jazz group, Solar Quintet (cdbaby page), so it should be pretty good. Also, kudos to The Loft for putting its Friday jazz events on their online calendar, now. Some additional detail-tweaking may be in order, but I'm happy they've started.

Sunday (7/10) in Columbus, starting at 6:00 PM EST, the Columbus Jazz Society hosts its monthly concert and jam session at the Liberty Theatre. This month, performing will be Eric Thomas featuring Elevate the Quest. There's more about the group up currently on the Society's website and a few videos on YouTube. Those playing in the 8:00 jam session after the concert do not have to pay the $10 cover.

Also on Sunday (7/10), 1048 Jazz and Blues in Montgomery will host its weekly jazz jam from 9:30 PM - 12:30 AM.

Atlanta Symphony Orchestra

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will be playing the music of 70s/80s pop group ABBA with ARRIVAL from Sweden on Friday (7/8). Here's the event page. I like this video on YouTube that looks like it was taken by one of the musicians on the stage at Red Rocks (two drum sets!). Here's ARRIVAL from Sweden's website: http://www.themusicofabba.com/. This will probably be a fun show.

Then on Saturday (7/9), the orchestra will perform with "Broadway powerhouse" Idina Menzel. She's also tony-award-winning powerhouse, film-star powerhouse, Glee-guest-star powerhouse, writes-her-own-songs powerhouse and Taye-Diggs's-baby's-momma powerhouse. Also, she's real pretty. Here's the event page, and here's an article about the event from Atlanta Intown Paper.
