Tedeschi Trucks, Dirty Dozen and Cirque Come to Atlanta

On Saturday (7/30) at the Delta Classic Chastain Ampitheater in Atlanta, the Tedeschi Trucks Band will play. Here's the event page. I don't follow the Tedeschi Trucks Band, but they got my attention when I was looking into Atlanta drummer Yonrico Scott who played at the Alex City Jazz Festival in June (post). Scott had played with the Derek Trucks Band in 2009 when it won a Grammy.

Tedeschi is Susan Tedeschi, Trucks's wife, nominated for a Grammy that same year for her own album. Trucks may be best known playing co-lead guitar with the Allman Brothers Band. He and Tedeschi have come together for this project, and it sounds pretty good. I'm not a huge fan of bluesy rock bands, but I like a good song, and I like to hear a band with great musicians playing whatever.

I'm actually listening to the band's album, Revelator, right now, and I think they would kill in Auburn. We seem to be all about blues and rock bands and singer-songwriters. I love Trucks's guitar sound. I don't have the background to write about it well, but I'll call it polished vintage. It makes me think of Robert Johnson. If I had more readers, I think I would feel some of them rolling their eyes right now.

The band includes the Burbridge brothers, Oteil and Kofi. You can hear Kofi playing flute and keys on the Yonrico Scott track I embedded in that Alex City post. Both groove very, very hard. Very hard. The album does not let them stretch out too much, but I would expect the live show to be a lot more free, considering the talents of not just these brothers, but of all of the musicians.

Also on the band is saxophonist Kebbi Williams. Here's a YouTube video of him (or someone with the same name who also plays the saxophone) playing the crap out of "Oleo" in Atlanta. Does he live there? I don't have time to research right now. Drummer JJ Johnson is on the band and others. It's a big band. Here's the Tedeschi Truck Band website. It will share the stage that night with New Orleans's legendary (too strong?) Dirty Dozen Brass Band (website).

Also on Saturday (7/30) Cirque du Soleil comes to the Verizon Wireless Ampitheatre in Atlanta to perform with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Here's the event page for Cirque de la Symphonie.

Auburn Jazz and AU Music Farewells

Alto saxophonist Coleman Woodson, Jr., from Montgomery will headline Friday (7/29) at Piccolo from 8-11. Then Saturday will be Kenyon Carter (website and good clip video), a saxophonist from Atlanta and a regular player at the club. Ariccia should have their weekly jazz brunch going this Sunday (7/31), 11 AM - 2 PM. I'm checking on players.

UPDATE: Brunch players will be pianist Coleman Woodson, III; bassist Sidney Simmons Patrick Bruce on guitar; and drummer David Zuwiyya.

Russell Haight, jazz and saxophone instructor about whom I have raved on several occasions, has left Auburn. He will start a teaching job at Texas State University in Austin, which was his home before moving here. I am sad to see him go, but am thankful for what he has done to jump start the jazz program at AU. A new jazz/sax instructor will likely be named in the next couple of weeks.

Also, piano instructor Henning Vauth tells me that he will be going to Marshall University in West Virginia where he'll be Assistant Professor of Piano and Coordinator of the Keyboard Area. Thanks to both you guys for sharing your music with us here on the plains and godspeed.

Jazz in Columbus and Montgomery

Friday (7/29) at The Loft in Columbus, The Solar Quintet will perform. Here's it's cdbaby page with some audio samples. Personnel is Fred Ezekiel on alto sax, David Johnston on bass, Elwood Madeo on guitar, Donald Tipton on piano and David Morgan on drums.

And again on Sunday night (7/31), 1048 Jazz and Blues in Montgomery will host its weekly jazz jam.
