Knights Reunion Late-Night Jams, Jazz at Piccolo and The Loft, More

I've already posted about the Auburn Knights Alumni Association reunion going on right now and through Saturday (7/23). At right is a video from last year's (2010) reunion. It's one of the late (late) night jam sessions at the hotel that happen throughout the nights of the weekend. Anyone can come out to hear them. Just go out to the Auburn Opelika Marriott at Grand National and wander around. You'll find at least one. This one was recorded by guitarist Jonathan Harms. Personnel are Rick Bell on tenor sax, Khari Lee on alto sax, Sonny Harris on drums, Sidney Simmons on bass, Mary Sue ? on piano and both Patrick Bruce and Harms on guitar. Anyone know who the trumpet player is? Bass?


Other Jazz in Auburn

Despite the competition, Piccolo is continuing its weekly jazz with Atlanta saxophonists Taylor Kennedy (Friday, 7/22) and Kenyon Carter (Saturday, 7/23). Both nights go from 8-11. Jazz in two venues for two days in a row almost looks like a real scene. Way to go, A-O!

I'm not sure who's playing Sunday, but Ariccia usually has a jazz brunch from 11-2.


Jazz and Cinema Opera in Columbus and Montgomery 

The Pershounin Project is a group I'd like to hear, and they play Friday night (7/23) at The Loft in Columbus. Alex Pershounin is the bass player and jazz instructor at Columbus State University. Personnel in his group will be saxophonist Amy Griffiths, guitarist Trey Wright and drummer Paul Vaillancourt.

Montgomery's 1048 Jazz and Blues will have its weekly jazz jam on Sunday from 9:30 PM - 12:30 AM.

On Wednesday (7/27), Rave Motion Pictures in Montgomery will show Verdi's opera Don Carlo from The Met's simulcast series. You can get tickets online by going to movietickets.com's page for this showing. This may be the last opera or ballet simulcast we'll see until October if the theaters decide to continue. In a previous post, I've listed ways to give feedback to the participating theaters. Of course, as soon as I write that, I see that Rave will be showing another event next Thursday and others beyond that from other series. I'll try to find out about Auburn's Carmike.
