Auburn Orchestra Tonight, High-art Simulcasts, Me at the Museum and Piccolo, More

Sorry I missed mentioning it last week, but The Auburn Community Orchestra will perform tonight (3/7) at AU's Telfair Peet Theatre under the direction of Dr. Howard Goldstein. The concert starts at 7:30 PM and will include pieces by Finnish composers Bernhard Crusell (1775-1838) and Jean Sibelius (1865-1957). Featured will be AU clarinet professor David Odom (AU bio page) on Crusell's Second Clarinet Concerto. Here's the AU event page.


This Week's Movie-house Simulcasts

I have not confirmed this directly with the local movie theater, but if its schedule matches what's on the Emerging Pictures websites, then Auburn's Carmike Wynnsong 16 will simulcast (live) two major high-art productions in the coming days. If I can confirm this locally, I'll update this post.

The first is the Bolshoi Ballet's production of Le Corsaire, this Sunday (3/11) at 10 AM which will encore March 20 at 7 PM. Choreography is by Alexei Ratmansky in the tradition of ballet master Marius Petipa who did some revivals of the ballet in the late 19th century. I barely know what I'm writing. I know so little about ballet and who to credit for what. My shallow research makes me think that the original composer of the music was the French Adolphe Adam (1803-1856). But it seems that this production may include music by other composers including Léo Delibes (1836-1891). Then Tuesday (3/13) at 2 PM, Giacomo Puccini's opera La Bohèmewill simulcast from the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Spain. It will encore on March 27 at 7 PM. A Little Chamber Music

Tomorrow at noon, my trio, The Woodfield Trio will perform for A Little Lunch Music, the weekly series at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art. We are pianist Barbara Acker-Mills, cellist Charles Wright who founded the series, and me on flute and saxophones. Because we have a sax in the group, people more often than not expect that we will be playing jazz, but we're a classical trio. That being said, I have been known to improvise over some Telemann, and we will, in fact, be moving forward with another movement of Claude Bolling's Suite for Flute and Piano which is heavily influenced by jazz. Speaking of saxophones, the AU student Tiger Saxophone Quartet will perform tomorrow night at Goodwin Hall starting at 7:30 PM. Here's the event page.


Jazz at Auburn University Hotel and Conference Center

Thursday night (3/8), we'll see the Jane Drake Trio back at Piccolo (alert: music auto-load) from 8-11 PM. She sings jazz with pianist Jonathan Lynn and bassist Sidney Simmons. Friday night (3/9), Neil Newcomb will be headlining. Saturday (3/10) it will be yours truly with CSU jazz program head Dr. Alex Pershounin on bass (I'm real [sic] excited) and guitarist Patrick Bruce. Pershounin has his own group that plays in Columbus at The Loft and for the Columbus Jazz Society. Here's his CSU bio page. He is originally from Russia, studied at the prestigious Gnessins' State Academy of Music in Moscow, and has taught jazz extensively. Even so, I'll probably ask him to play "'A' Train" and "Ipanema." We'll have fun. Come hear.

Patrick Bruce will return with his trio to the hotel's restaurant, Ariccia, for its Sunday (3/11) brunch from 11-2.

And Beyond...

That's about all I can report on very locally. There looks to be some significant events in Columbus this Sunday and Monday with acclaimed jazz pianist Lenore Raphael doing the Columbus Jazz Society concert this Sunday (details currently on CJS's website) and a master class on Monday at 1 PM Eastern Time in the RiverCenter's Studio Theatre (event page). Also, Van Cliburn gold medalist Alexander Kobrin will play a piano-four-hand recital with Yien Wang at 7:30 PM Eastern Time. Both are on faculty at CSU. Here's that event page. If I have time, I'll dig further out to see what might be worth a drive and do another post. But I probably won't have time.

Next week is AU's Spring Break, and the Museum Café will be closed. We will not do a lunch music concert on March 15.

And I should be able to mention these events again, but look forward on the AU calendar to the Josh Pifer piano recital on March 22 and the next night's PEN Trio performance. Also, The Pilobolus show in the East Alabama Arts series looks interesting on March 29.
