David Russell in Columbus, Indian Music at the Museum, Jazz at Piccolo and More
Tomorrow night (3/22) at RiverCenter's Legacy Hall in Columbus, Georgia, Grammy-Award-winning classical guitarist David Russell will perform at 7:30 PM Eastern time (CSU event page). The video at right is used by permission and is courtesy of his YouTube channel (davidrussellguitar).
Tonight (3/21) at Emory University, concert saxophone legend Eugene Rousseau (University of Minnesota bio) will give a performance and master class with the Croatian Zagreb Saxophone Quartet (site has some problems with audio). I don't know about the quartet, but there is some video online (or just audio with a still) like this one of them playing a Brahms piano quintet transcription. As for Rousseau, I won't say much, as I think it would be hard to convince most of my 20 or so readers to drop everything--you'd need to leave Auburn in about an hour--and drive to Atlanta this afternoon for a classical saxophone event. But you should, especially if you are any kind of saxophonist. Here's an event page on McIntosh High School's band's website. It doesn't appear to be on Emory's own music event calendar. *sigh*
Tomorrow (3/22) from noon to 1:00 PM, the lunch-music series I coordinate at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art will host Dr. S. Raj Chaudhury and the Auburn Indian Music Ensemble. They performed last spring for us, and Dr. Chaudhury does a good job putting the somewhat unfamiliar sounds we are hearing into context. This music is based on a system very different from the one on which conventional Western classical music is based. Do come and hear the free concert, enjoy the museum's exhibitions and have a delicious lunch at the Museum Café. For more on the series, visit my Lunch Music Schedule page.
Jazz at Auburn's Piccolo
This week at Piccolo MAL, the Jane Drake Trio returns on Thursday (3/22), Taylor Kennedy (MySpace page) on Friday (3/23), and AU's saxophone and jazz instructor Mike Pendowski (AU bio) on Saturday (3/24). All are no-cover shows from 8-11 PM. All will be worth your time, so go listen, eat and drink!
On Sunday (3/25), Ariccia will have its Jazz Brunch from 11-2. I think the Jack Dresher trio will play, but that's not confirmed.
A Lot More Classical Music in Auburn and Columbus
Dr. Joshua Pifer (AU bio page), AU's new piano lecturer will do a recital Thursday night (3/22) at Goodwin Hall (AU event page). Dr. Pifer opened the lunch-music series at the museum last fall and played beautifully. His specialties are works by Japanese composers and also the music of Alexander Tcherepnin. This should be very, very good. If I can get some program information, I'll update this post.
On Friday (3/23), the PEN Trio, a traditional trio d-anches with oboist Nora Lewis, clarinetist Phillip O. Paglialonga (choose HTML version to avoid MAL and FBS alerts) and bassoonist Eric Van der Veer Varner (Heidelberg University bio) will perform at Goodwin Hall (AU event page). I thought I saw some video online the other day but can't find it now. The trio is based in the Midwest. From what I can tell, they seem to be committed to performing and touring together as a group, so I would expect good music.
AU's Spring Choral Concert will be this Sunday (3/25) at 2:30 PM at Auburn United Methodist Church (AU event page). Note the following Saturday (3/31) the AU Chamber Choir will be in Columbus as part of a big Columbus Symphony Orchestra event there.
UPDATE: For the choral event this Sunday (3/25), performing will be the Chamber Choir, Women's Chorus, Men's Chorus and Concert Choir. It will be a multilingual performance and the big finish will be all of the choirs combined.
Next Wednesday (3/28) the Auburn Chamber Music Society MAL will present the Newstead Trio. I hope to do a separate post on this later. Competing for your ears that night will be soprano Anna Tonna with the CSU Chamber Orchestra (CSU event page).
Atlanta Symphony does Mozart and Beethoven this week. Thursday (3/22) Auburn's Carmike-Wynnsong 16 will simulcast live London's Royal Ballet production of Romeo and Juliet featuring the music of Sergei Prokofiev and the choreography of Kenneth MacMillan. Giacomo Puccini's La bohème from the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona, Spain, will encore at the Carmike next Tuesday (3/27) at 7:00 PM.
There are student recitals all over the place so peruse the AU and CSU calendars for even more music. I'll look deeper into Montgomery and Birmingham if I have time...but I likely won't.
