Auburn Orchestra with Two-Cello Concerto, "Here I Am, Lord" Composer in Town, Other End-of-Spring Events
The Auburn Community Orchestra will perform on Sunday, April 22, at 4:00 PM. The program will include a double-cello concerto featuring the Montgomery Symphony's cello fellow Laura Usiskin and auburn's new cello instructor Lisa Caravan (event page).
Thursday (4/19), A Little Lunch Music at the museum will present the AU Chamber Choir for 15-20 minutes of Heaven, if the group's similar short visit to last fall's series is any indication. It may be more, if I can talk Dr. Powell into it, and, I would imagine, if class schedules allow (UPDATE: and, most importantly, if they have more ready to perform, which they don't. I can forgive them since they recently performed Orff with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and I imagine have spend the lion's share of their recent rehearsal time on that. Firm on 15-20 minutes). AU student pianist Julia Tucker will play a Beethoven sonata (Op. 90) in preview of her recital that night. The Woodfield Trio will round out the hour. I coordinate this series and keep a detailed schedule on this very website.
Jesuit composer rock star Dan Schutte will be at Auburn's St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church this Friday night (4/20) for a concert at 7:30 PM and then a workshop on Saturday. He composed "Here I am, Lord" and a ton of other sacred songs. There's more about this including a contact person on a PDF linked from the church's centennial celebration page.
Over the next few weeks, there are several noteworthy music events going on at AU including performances by the concert, symphonic and jazz bands; the community orchestra; student piano recitals including the aforementioned Julia's; and the Auburn Indian Music Ensemble (UPDATE: and the AU Faculty brass trio!). Also, the student trumpet ensemble could be interesting, and you can count on the the AU Singers being good. There's more, of course, because it's April, so check out all the events' dates and times on the Music Department's April calendar. This will be about your last chance to hear much university music until September. Same is true for Columbus State's music calendar, where Texas State University's Trio 488 looks promising for Wednesday night (4/18).
Jazz will play at Piccolo MAL, as usual, Thursday through Saturday 8-11 PM, and Ariccia will do it's weekly jazz brunch Sunday, 11-2. Except for vocalist Jane Drake's regular gig on Thursday, I don't know about players for the weekend. I'll update this post when I learn.
UPDATE: AU jazz and saxophone instructor Mike Pendowski will headline at Piccolo Friday night (4/20). Saxophonist Coleman Woodson will headline Saturday (4/21). It looks like the venue's website is beginning to list weekend performers, except for Jane, which confuses me.
East Alabama Arts is presenting South Pacific on April 26 (local event page). It will actually play earlier in Columbus at the RiverCenter on April 24-25.

Tomorrow night (4/17), world-class cellist Wendy Warner will perform Antonin Dvoråk's B-minor concerto with the LaGrange Symphony for its spring finale. I actually can't find on the orchestra's website what time the concert starts.
Also concerto-ing this month will be Acclaimed violinist Tai Murray with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra for its April 21 program at 7:30 PM Eastern time (event page).
On April 30 at 7:30 PM, the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra will do its final regular-season concert that will include the winner of its 2012 Blount-Slawson Young Artists Competition and something by Mahler (event page). The MSO pops concert will be May 25.

Auburn and Montgomery Simulcasts
You can see the Bolshoi ballet do The Bright Stream simulcast at the Carmike-Wynnsong 16 on April 29. On Tuesday, April 17 you might be able to see the Royal Opera House's Rigoletto simulcast there, but the time is not listed on the website. Try calling the theater at 501-0400. It will encore on April 24 at 7:00 PM.
Montgomery's Rave Festival Plaza 16 is not offering tickets online for Fathom Events' MAL next two Metropolitan Opera production encores. But it looks like it will be presenting the New York opera company's production of Richard Wagner's epic Ring cycle starting on May 9 with Das Rheingold and, before that, a two-hour documentary about the production on May 7.
