Flute-Guitar at Lunch Music, AU Pops and Singers Shows, CSU Jazz Band and More
Tomorrow (4/26) at lunch, flutist Stephanie Erdman will play a delightfully diverse program at the museum with guitarist Jacob Brown. This is a free concert from noon to 1:00 PM and is part of the museum's A Little Lunch Music series that I coordinate. The series' schedule page on my website here has more information. Stephanie and Jacob are two undergraduate students at Columbus State University who have played together since 2010. Some of the composers represented will be Saint-Saens, Pessard, Bach, Ian Clarke (b. 1977), Giuliani and more. Here's a link to an article about it on oanow.com. This will likely be a quieter performance, so we'll try to do it in the Grand Gallery in case the café gets loud. To be sure you hear the music, come early to eat. Or, if you don't have that kind of time, you can order some of Ursula's delicious food to-go.
Final Spring Events at AU, CSU and Others
Tonight (4/25), the Auburn Faculty Brass Trio will perform at Goodwin Hall. There's more about that in my last post. Also in that post, I mentioned the Auburn Indian Music Ensemble which played its final spring concert last night. If you want to get an introduction to what this music is all about, you should take Dr. Chaudhury's summer class which starts May 23 (AU course information page). Anyone can register. I might.
The very popular AU POPS! and AU Singers spring shows will be this weekend, 4/27-4/29. See the AU music calendar for April for detailed program information, times and ticket prices. This will be it for regular AU music events until the fall.
For your big-band fix, go to Columbus this Saturday (4/28) for a festival-style outdoor concert by CSU's Jazz Band and its Popular Music Ensemble starting at 7:00 PM Eastern time (event page). The CSU Jazz Band will actually be at The Loft the night before (Friday, 4/27) from 7-9 Eastern time. Or, if for some reason you happen to be near Talladega, I'll be sitting in with the Heritage Hall Jazz Band at the Historic Ritz Theater OOD Saturday night (4/28) where I hear there will concurrently be a car show going on outside. That one starts at 7:00 PM Central.
Local Jazz, Ballet Simulcast, More
Jazz at the Auburn Hotel and Conference Center is on for this weekend. Jane Drake will sing Thursday (4/26) with her trio at Piccolo, 8-11. Friday and Saturday (4/27-4/28), Piccolo will have saxophonist headliners Taylor Kennedy from Atlanta (MySpace page) and Stan Murray from Columbus respectively. Jazz brunch at Ariccia is 11-2.
The Bolshoi Ballet's production of The Bright Stream will simulcast on Sunday (4/29) at 10:00 AM and then "encore" (rerun) the same day at 4:30 PM at the Auburn Carmike-Wynnsong 16. They'll do a second encore on May 15 at 7:00 PM. Music for The Bright Stream is by Dmitri Shostokovich and this production's choreography is Alexei Ratmansky's. Here's a link to the page that Ballet in Cinema set up for our local theater. It has more information on the production and other upcoming showings. Auburn's opera simulcasts may be done for the summer. See the bottom of the post two posts ago where I mentioned some Wagner things coming up in Montgomery.
According to the local band Shutup 'n' Clap! FBD, they will be performing with others at The Gnu's Room in Auburn this Thursday (4/26) starting at 7:00 PM. I don't see any official event page online, yet.
Bluegrass, Orchestras, Surprisingly Big Jazz in May
You should go ahead and get tickets now to the Daily & Vincent (band website) concert on May 22 presented in Opelika by the East Alabama Arts Association (event page). This is a bluegrass group with a pretty high profile and some impressive awards. I'll mention it again.
The Alabama Symphony Orchestra will be going to Carnegie Hall to perform on May 10. Here's a link to a February al.com article by Michael Huebner about it and here's a link to the venue's own event page. Visit the orchestra's website for more about its concerts this weekend, a bon voyage concert on May 4, its Pops concert on May 5 and more.
The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra has a whole summer schedule to check out (website).
I am gearing up for a separate post about a huge deal on May 26 at the RiverCenter in Columbus: Poncho Sanchez and his Latin Big Band featuring Terence Blanchard (CSU event page). Not only that, but it appears that the great jazz trumpeter Woody Shaw will be performing that weekend*. These are part of the International Trumpet Guild Conference going on at CSU (conference page), and there are other performers on the schedule. It is not immediately apparent how to get the $40 tickets to the Sanchez/Blanchard event or whether the Shaw event and other performances are even open to the public. I'm looking into it.
*UPDATE: Woody Shaw only lived until 1989. This is his son, Woody Shaw III, doing a lecture.
