Emory Quartet-in-Residence Performs in Auburn Thursday (4/4/13)

The Vega Quartet is pleased to perform at Auburn University's Goodwin Recital Hall this coming Thursday, April 4 at 7:30 pm CDT. We will be performing Beethoven's quartet Op. 95 in f minor, nicknamed the "Serioso," a fiery compact work that straddles the cusp of Beethoven's Middle and Late periods.

We will follow the "Serioso" with a piece by Atlanta native David Kirkland Garner entitled "I ain't broke (but I'm badly bent); Thirteen Fiddle Tunes for String Quartet." We are especially fond of this piece, as it artfully weaves traditional folk material with a grounded mastery of the string quartet medium in a lively and engaging discourse. David is a PhD candidate at Duke University and recent father; more information about his work can be found at www.davidkirklandgarner.com.

We will conclude the program with Mendelssohn's Quartet in e minor, Op. 44 No. 2. Another of our favorites, this piece combines the technical virtuosity reminiscent of his Violin Concerto with the romantic lyricism and spunky wit of his famous orchestral works like the "Italian Symphony" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream."
